Who is Mrs. Spencer?

Hello! Welcome to 7th-grade social studies! I am thrilled to have you in my class! This will be my tenth year in education and fifth year at McNabb. Previously, I taught 6th grade ELA at the former Montgomery County Intermediate School. I hold my bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education (Grades 5-9) from Morehead State University and my Master's Degree as a Literacy Specialist from the University of the Cumberlands.

In my spare time, I enjoy camping, traveling, musical theater, and spending time with my husband, Chase, our two girls, Ellie Kate and Bristol, our dogs, Sadie and Bo, and our cat, Rubble. I have lived in Montgomery County my entire life and feel blessed to have the opportunity to work in my hometown and in such a loving school.

I cannot wait to get to know your student and to help them succeed in 7th-grade social studies. This will be a busy year, but I am confident in your child’s success. We will grow, learn, and laugh, all while becoming a closer school family. If you ever need assistance, please feel free to reach out to me through our team Remind, give me a call at school, or reach me by email at sydney.spencer@montgomery.kyschools.us.

McNabb Middle School Grading Information

All grades will be weighted as follows:

Formative:   50%

Summative: 50%

Formative assignments include tasks such as:  homework, classwork, quizzes, interactive notebooks, etc.

Summative assessments include tasks such as:  unit exams, major projects, developed writing pieces, etc.

Standards-Based Grading Scale:

There will be two categories for grading: Summative Assessments (tests) is 50% of your student's total grade and Formative Assessments (bellringers/classwork) make up 50%. These scores are then averaged each nine weeks to create a final grade. Below is the scoring for Summative Assessments. Students have an opportunity to re-test on summative assessments if they have scored a 60% or lower.

Score  Percentage Meaning

4          80%      Student has mostly mastered the standard, needs some practice for full mastery

2          40%      Student has mastered a small part of the standard, but needs more practice to master

1          20%      Student has not mastered the standard & needs additional work/practice to master
